You can chew your food, eat your warm savory breakfasts, and even have your fiber + microbiome dialed in… but if your lifestyle is a stress tornado 🌪, your gut will still lock up.
And I’ll be honest — this isn’t the sexy stuff. 👄
Most people skip over it because they’d rather try another instant gratification quick fix like a supplement, cleanse, or “gut hack.” And I don’t blame you. Changing your hard-ingrained habits are hard, otherwise, everyone would be like Nike and “Just Do It”.
But I can’t tell you how many patients feel better just by regulating their stress, setting routines, and giving their nervous system a break. Even if they don’t do all the other stuff.
That’s because pooping is a parasympathetic job — it only happens when your body feels safe, calm, and regulated.
Stress, poor sleep, constant HIIT workouts, and rushing through life all keep you in fight-or-flight. And in fight-or-flight? Your gut literally says, “Nope. Not today.”
The good news: you can train your nervous system, your gut, and your brain to sync up so pooping becomes as automatic as brushing your teeth. Here’s how.
REGULATE THE VAGUS NERVE
Your vagus nerve is the main highway between your brain and your gut. When it’s calm and toned (like your muscles at the gym), motility flows.
When it’s fried from being stressed, multi-tasking, screens and scrollholes and constant demands of modern day life?
Constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and anxiety all get worse.
🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:
- You can’t poop when you travel or feel stressed
- Constipation flares after fights, deadlines, or anxious days
- Extra signs: racing heart, shallow breathing, poor sleep, gut issues linked with anxiety
✅ PRO TIPS:
- Acupuncture: one of the fastest ways to regulate vagal tone + motility
- Belly breathing before meals (inhale 4, exhale 6) to signal “rest + digest”. Or just take 5 deep breaths as a ritual before you start eating.
- Daily rituals:
- Journaling, meditation, singing/humming, or cold water splashes to stimulate your vagus nerve.
- But here’s the thing — it has to be daily. Think of it like the gym: you don’t build strength by going once when you’re desperate or feeling fluffy. Same with your nervous system and Vagus nerve — resilience comes from training it every day, not just in SOS moments.
- Movement swaps:
- If you’re grinding through HIIT or spin 4–5 days a week, trade a few of those sessions for yoga, Pilates, or walking.
- Your nervous system will thank you — and honestly, you might even lose weight once your cortisol drops and your body stops clinging to stress fat.
MOVE YOUR BODY (CONSISTENCY IS KEY)
Movement literally massages your intestines and tells your colon it’s time to contract.
But here’s the catch — it’s not just about exercising hard for an hour in the morning at your workout class or the gym, it’s about moving consistently.
Overtraining can spike cortisol and make things worse, while being glued to a desk, car, or couch for hours slows your bowels down to match. If you’re sedentary all day, your gut is too.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:
- You’re constipated and also sitting at a desk for 8–9 hours a day
- You go all day without moving much except from your chair to the fridge
- Your poops are sluggish when you skip movement for a few days in a row
- Extra signs: stiff joints, low energy, restless sleep, or always feeling “stuck” in your body
✅ PRO TIPS:
- Walk 10–15 minutes after meals — one of the best natural constipation fixes
- Step it up gradually: aim for 8–10k steps daily. Check your Health app to see your current average, then add ~1,000 steps per week until you’re there
- Break it up: morning walk, lunchtime reset, post-dinner stroll — easier than trying to cram it in at once and I find it easier to hit my targets in micro-dosing exercise during the day
- Desk job hacks:
- schedule micro-breaks every 30 minutes
- try a treadmill desk/walking pad
- do a quick block-walk lap in the morning and again before sinking into the couch at night (Netflix will still be waiting 😉)
- Yoga twists + gentle stretching to stimulate peristalsis and keep things moving
- Balance intensity: HIIT isn’t bad, but if you’re stressed/constipated, swap a few sessions for yoga, Pilates, or long walks so your nervous system doesn’t stay jacked up
CREATE A POOP RITUAL
Your colon (intestines) loves rhythm. Training your body to expect “poop time” strengthens the brain–gut connection and syncs your bowels with your natural circadian rhythm.
Here’s why that matters: your gut is on a 24-hour clock, just like your brain. Cortisol naturally rises in the morning to wake you up, and that surge also stimulates your bowels to contract. This is why most people should poop soon after waking — it’s built into your biology.
And interestingly, Chinese medicine has been saying the same thing for thousands of years. According to the body clock, 5–7am is “Large Intestine time” — when your colon is at peak activity.
Modern circadian rhythm science and ancient wisdom are basically describing the same process: your body is wired to eliminate in the morning.

When your circadian rhythm is off (late nights, skipping breakfast, eating at random times, constant blue light), your bowels get confused too. That’s when you see irregular poops, constipation, or even nighttime trips to the bathroom.
A healthy digestive system will usually clear out yesterday’s trash not long after you wake up — it’s your body’s way of pressing reset for the new day.
🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:
- Poops are all over the place, no consistency
- You’re always rushing and “don’t have time” to go in the morning
- Extra signs: incomplete poops, straining, only going every few days, or feeling like you “never fully empty”
✅ PRO TIPS:
- Set the scene: sit on the toilet at the same time daily (yes, even if you don’t feel the urge at first). This trains your body like clockwork. But don’t sit there for too long scrolling — we don’t want constipation AND hemorrhoids 😬
- Use a Squatty Potty or foot stool for better alignment — it straightens the anorectal angle so you’re not straining
- Don’t rush: give yourself 5–10 calm minutes. Read, breathe, or just chill — this signals safety to your nervous system so your gut can relax and release
- Stack the habit: drink a warm glass of water with lemon or do light movement (like a short walk or stretches) right after waking to nudge motility
TRY CASTOR OIL PACKS

Castor oil isn’t just an old-school remedy — it’s a powerful tool for gut and hormone health. When applied to the abdomen, castor oil packs stimulate lymphatic flow, calm inflammation, and gently nudge sluggish bowels.
But the benefits go beyond constipation, bloating and diarrhea relief: castor oil supports bile flow, fat digestion, hormone balance, and even reproductive health.
🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:
- Constipation that doesn’t budge even with diet changes
- Bloating + “stuck” feeling around your lower abdomen
- PMS, irregular cycles, or pelvic pain
- Extra signs: sluggish liver/gallbladder, poor fat digestion (floating/oily stools), chronic inflammation
✅ PRO TIPS:
- Apply castor oil to your abdomen, cover with a castor pack, and add gentle heat. Get my fave oil and pack here.
- Best done at night — your liver/gallbladder detox between 11pm–3am
- Consistency is key: use 3–4x/week for best results
HEAL THE ROOT CAUSE

If you’ve tried all of the above and still struggle, constipation isn’t just “bad luck.” There’s likely a deeper imbalance — things like SIBO, parasites, sluggish bile, low stomach acid, or hormone dysfunction.
🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:
- You’ve had constipation for years and nothing really changes
- You rely on laxatives, coffee, or magnesium just to go
- Extra signs: PMS, skin issues, anxiety, fatigue, nutrient deficiencies
- “All your labs are normal” but you feel anything but
✅ PRO TIPS:
- Book a functional medicine session with me. Our first visit is like a deep-dive detective session: we go through your full health history, current symptoms, diet, lifestyle, stress, and sleep. Most people tell me it’s the first time anyone has ever looked at their whole picture instead of just one symptom.
- Based on what I find, we’ll order targeted testing — like a comprehensive stool analysis, SIBO breath test, or bloodwork — to see if things like parasites, bacterial overgrowth, sluggish bile, or nutrient gaps are the real block.
- Then we make a custom plan that’s actually doable — a mix of diet tweaks, lifestyle shifts, acupuncture if you’re local, and supplements where needed. The goal isn’t to give you a laundry list of 25 things, it’s to find the leverage points that move your digestion forward.
- Think of it like finally having someone connect the dots for you — instead of guessing, Googling, or throwing random supplements at the wall.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I know this isn’t the flashy, sexy side of gut health. It’s not a new supplement, cleanse, or biohack — it’s stress regulation, daily routines, and nervous system support. And because it’s not a ‘quick easy fix’, most people skip it.
But here’s the truth: I’ve seen patients get more relief from consistent walks, better sleep, and vagus nerve support than from hundreds of dollars of supplements. These are the things that quietly rewire your gut-brain axis so your digestion can finally run on autopilot.

👉 Blog 3 proves that without lifestyle + nervous system support, none of the rest will stick.
If you’re still not pooping daily after all this? That’s your body waving a red flag. It’s not just “bad luck” or “stress” — it’s your gut telling you something’s off.
Because let’s be real — the gold standard is a poop so smooth it feels like nature’s mic drop. Wipe optional. 🎤💩
