“Leaky gut” might sound like a made-up buzzword, but it’s very real — and it’s connected to way more symptoms than most people realize.
From bloating and food sensitivities to skin issues, hormone imbalance, and even autoimmune conditions, the health of your gut lining affects your entire body.
Let’s break it down.
WHAT IS LEAKY GUT?
Your gut lining is supposed to act like a smart security system. Imagine it as a tightly woven net with very small holes. Nutrients pass through into your bloodstream, but bigger things — like toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles — should stay out.
When the gut lining gets damaged, those “tight junctions” loosen. The holes in the net get bigger → stuff that doesn’t belong in your bloodstream starts slipping through. Your immune system sees it as a threat and goes on the attack.
That’s leaky gut (also called intestinal permeability).

SYMPTOMS OF LEAKY GUT
Leaky gut can show up in lots of different ways — not just digestive problems. Even a handful of these is a red flag your gut lining needs support:
- 🚨Food sensitivities:
- If you’re suddenly reacting to foods you used to tolerate, that’s often a red flag for leaky gut. When the gut lining is damaged, undigested food particles slip into the bloodstream, and your immune system treats them like invaders.
- This is why I rarely run food sensitivity tests at the beginning (or at all) — if your gut is leaky, you’ll light up red to half the foods you eat, even though you’re not truly allergic to them. We gotta heal the gut regardless so sure, it can help us narrow down your diet to begin with but I’d rather save you the $600 of the test, have you do Whole30 and heal your gut lining first.
- Blood sugar swings + cravings:
- Leaky gut can also drive sugar cravings and blood sugar crashes, since inflammation messes with how your body handles carbs. If you’re riding the hangry rollercoaster after meals, it’s another sign your gut needs repair.
- Digestive issues:
- The most obvious signs of leaky gut are digestive — bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, IBS, or SIBO. If your digestion feels unpredictable or “off” most days, that’s your gut waving a red flag.

- Skin issues:
- Acne, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea often start in the gut. When the gut lining is compromised, toxins and inflammation show up on the skin — it’s why so many skin conditions improve when we heal digestion.

- Hormone imbalance:
- PMS, PCOS, endometriosis, irregular cycles, and fertility struggles can all be linked back to gut health. A leaky gut recycles old hormones instead of eliminating them, throwing your whole system off balance.

- Brain + mood symptoms:
- Anxiety, depression, mood swings, brain fog, and fatigue are common with leaky gut. That’s because the gut and brain are connected via the vagus nerve and 70% of your serotonin is made in the gut.

- Systemic inflammation:
- Joint pain, headaches, and stubborn weight struggles can all stem from leaky gut. When your immune system is constantly triggered, inflammation doesn’t stay in the gut — it spreads everywhere.

- Autoimmunity:
- Leaky gut is a known trigger for autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, and MS. When the gut barrier breaks down, the immune system can get so confused it starts attacking your own tissues.
👉 In other words: leaky gut isn’t just a “stomach problem.” It can impact hormones, skin, mood, energy, and immune balance across the board.
WHAT CAUSES LEAKY GUT?
Modern life isn’t exactly kind to your gut. Between processed foods, constant stress, meds, and environmental toxins, most of us are exposed to things every day that chip away at the integrity of the gut lining.
Over time, these stressors weaken your digestive barrier, inflame the lining, and open the door to leaky gut.
- Poor diet: processed foods, sugar, alcohol, artificial additives, seed oils
- Gluten: contains zonulin, a protein that can open up gut junctions
- Medications: antibiotics, NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), acid blockers (Zantac, Pepto, Pepcid), birth control pills
- Stress: cortisol weakens the gut lining and slows digestion
- Infections + overgrowths: parasites, Candida, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)
- Toxins: mold exposure, heavy metals, pesticides
LEAKY GUT AND AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE: THE HIDDEN CONNECTION
One of the biggest concerns with leaky gut is its connection to autoimmune disease.
When your gut lining is compromised, it’s like the security guard at the door takes a nap and lets anyone wander in. Undigested food particles, bacteria, and toxins slip through into your bloodstream, and your immune system goes on high alert.
The problem?
Over time, that constant overreaction can confuse your immune system so much that it starts attacking your own tissues instead.
That’s the autoimmune connection — and it’s why leaky gut is often linked to conditions like Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, and multiple sclerosis.
So yes, leaky gut can cause bloating and those other gut issues many people ignore or brush off as ‘normal’, but left unchecked it can also set the stage for full-blown autoimmune disease.
HOW TO TEST FOR LEAKY GUT
There’s no single “gold standard,” but functional medicine uses several tools to see if intestinal permeability is at play:
- Cyrex Array 2 → looks at antibodies to gut barrier proteins (the most direct test)
- Comprehensive stool testing → shows inflammation, dysbiosis, infections, secretory IgA (immune marker) that allow us to make the assumption that your gut is leaky
- Zonulin blood test → marker of gut permeability, though can be inconsistent
Sometimes, symptoms and case history are clear enough to start supporting the gut while testing confirms it.
THE TAKEAWAY
Leaky gut isn’t just about your digestion — it’s about your whole health. If your gut lining is inflamed or damaged, it can trigger a cascade of symptoms everywhere else in the body.
The good news? Your gut lining can heal. With the right diet, lifestyle shifts, targeted supplements, and functional medicine testing, you can repair the barrier, calm inflammation, and start feeling like yourself again.
