CANDIDA OR PARASITE- UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE
Hey wellness warriors! 🌿 Today, we’re diving into a question that often pops up: Is Candida a parasite?Â
Let’s unravel this mystery together and explore what Candida really is.
WHAT IS CANDIDA?
Candida is a type of yeast, which is a form of fungus. While it often gets a bad rap, it’s actually a normal part of the body’s flora, commonly found in the mouth, intestines, and vagina. Usually, Candida coexists peacefully with other microorganisms in our body. However, when the balance of our microbiome is disrupted, Candida can overgrow, leading to an infection known as candidiasis.
PARASITE VS. FUNGUS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
To understand whether Candida is a parasite, let’s first clarify what a parasite is.Â
Parasites are organisms that live on or in a host, absorbing nutrients at the host’s expense. They often cause harm or disease to their host especially when they exist in excess.
Candida, on the other hand, is a fungus. While it can cause infections, it doesn’t fit the classic definition of a parasite. Instead of living off a host like a parasite, Candida is more of an opportunistic pathogen, taking advantage of imbalances in the body to overgrow and cause issues.
WHY THE CONFUSION?
The confusion often arises because Candida can cause significant health problems, much like parasites do. Here’s how Candida overgrowth can impact your health:
Digestive Issues: Candida can cause bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits. It thrives on sugar and refined carbohydrates, which can exacerbate these symptoms.
Fatigue and Brain Fog: Overgrowth can release toxins that affect your energy levels and mental clarity.
Immune System Impact: Candida overgrowth can weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to other infections.
Increased Vaginal Discharge: Candida can cause you to have thicker and more vaginal discharge as well as a thicker tongue coating.Â

MANAGING CANDIDA OVERGROWTH
At Flora Fauna Wellness, we believe in a holistic approach to managing Candida. Here are some tips to keep Candida in check:
-
- Diet:
- Reduce sugar, alcohol and refined carbs, which all feed Candida.
- Incorporate antifungal foods like garlic, coconut oil, ginger, cruciferous veggies and pumpkin seeds.
- Eat warm, cooked foods that are easy to digest.Â
- Cold and raw foods like salads and sushi can cause ‘dampness’ according to Chinese Medicine and leave you with that thick layer of mucus and what feels like a wet blanket on your brain and body.
- Get Tested:
- Diet:
- It’s important to do a stool test like GI Effects to see if the imbalance is coming from too many good bacteria, not enough good bacteria, or an overgrowth of bad bacteria. This will create a more targeted treatment approach instead of throwing random supplements at it and seeing if they work! Set up a Functional Medicine Initial Consult to get yourself set up with a test!
- Probiotics:
- Support your gut health with probiotics to restore balance to your microbiome. My favorite is CT-Biotic by Cellcore (get it with my practitioner code: rwd3vHQ5).
- Stress Management:
- Stress can weaken your immune system, so daily practices like yoga, meditation, breathwork, journaling and adequate sleep are essential. Don’t undermine these incredibly important practices!
- Natural Antifungals:
- You can try using some natural antifungal supplements like oregano oil, caprylic acid, and berberine. My favorites are Candicidal and Berberine-ES by Xymogen (get it here at my online pharmacy Wholescripts).Â
SO… IS CANDIDA A PARASITE?
So, is Candida a parasite? No, Candida is a fungus, not a parasite. However, its ability to cause significant health issues when overgrown makes it a formidable opponent. By understanding Candida and taking proactive steps, you can keep this yeast in check and maintain optimal health.
