The Short Answer? Yes!

BUT… if you’ve ever dealt with insurance, you probably know it’s not the most straight-forward of processes. Acupuncture coverage varies widely from company-to-company and even individual plan-to-plan.

This means that even if both you and your coworker have Blue Shield, you may not have the same coverage (or one of you may not have coverage at all).

That’s why you need to check YOUR specific plan and benefits

Did you know you can use your FSA or HSA for acupuncture and other health services?

That’s right! So even if you DON’T have acupuncture coverage you can swipe your FSA or HSA just like a credit card with us. Some companies get a little weird about paying for supplements or products but most cover acupuncture, cupping, laser and gua sha!

The Fine Print

Here’s the thing about insurance and acupuncture… most insurance companies only cover SPECIFIC conditions and procedures. For example:

Most companies will cover for pain but won’t cover for fertility.

Most will cover for chemo-related nausea but not morning sickness or unexplained nausea.

Some companies will cover for acupuncture and cupping. Some will ONLY cover for acupuncture but NOT cupping.

This is why we have to check what YOUR plan covers because there are many variables.

Insurance is a fickle beast and that is why many acupuncturists choose to go Out-Of-Network — because this game just gets too confusing for both of us! Playing the insurance game also limits the care we can provide and this homie don’t play that!

So instead, we provide you with a superbill so that you can submit it to insurance for reimbursement.

It’s super easy!

How does it work?

In our office, we will provide you with a superbill. A ‘Superbill’ is a detailed receipt that explains the services we did and why in insurance language.

We send these monthly (upon request) and then you submit it to your insurance either online (fastest) or by mail for reimbursement.

Here's How to Check Your Own Insurance Benefits

Check Online: If you’re tech saavy, you can login to your account online and check your acupuncture benefits. With some companies, it’s super easy and clear what your benefits are.

Woman calling about insurance benefits

Call Customer Service: Dial up that number on the back of your card! Follow the instructions below to get the most out of your call.

The fastest and “easiest” way is to check online.

Log into your insurance companies website or app and find the section that says something like… “Benefits”. Look for acupuncture on the list. They should list both “in-network” and “out-of-network”. We are “out-of-network” with most insurances so pay particular attention to that section if you plan on working with us! We provide you with superbills every few weeks that you can submit to insurance for reimbursement and seeing what your “OON” benefits are ahead of time will help you approximate what you should be getting back in return.

If you’d like to find someone within your own network, check the “in-network” section to see if you have acupuncture benefits and what they are. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers. We get it! Healthcare can add up and if you’re already paying for insurance we can understand why you want to put that money towards good use.

1. Grab a pen and paper

2. Call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card

3. Confirm your member number, name and birthday with the rep

4. Tell them that you would like both the ‘in-network’ and ‘out-of-network’ acupuncture benefits (it’s best to be prepared and know ALL your benefits)

Ask for In-Network first and be sure they answer the following questions:

  • Do I have in-network acupuncture benefits?
  • Do I need to meet my deductible before I get coverage? – IF YES: what is my deductible before I get coverage?
  • What is my copay or coinsurance?
  • How many visits are allowed per year?
  • Do I need pre-authorization from my physician?

Now ask for the out-of-network benefits:

  • Do I have out-network acupuncture benefits?
  • Do I need to meet my deductible before I get coverage? – IF YES: what is my deductible before I get coverage?
  • What is my copay or coinsurance?
  • How many visits are allowed per year?
  • Do I need pre-authorization from my physician?

ALWAYS get the representative’s name and the call reference number at the end of the call

*Unfortunately misquotes can happen and it’s important that you have record of what the rep tells you.
