When most people hear “insulin resistance,” they assume it only applies if you’re overweight or pre-diabetic.
But honestly? I see it all the time in women who would never think they’re at risk.
They’re snacking constantly — grabbing protein bars, oat milk lattes, granola, green juices, acai bowls, and high-carb lunches (pastas, sandwiches, salads with barely any protein, wraps, grain bowls).
They might skip breakfast or run on coffee.
They finish the night with wine, dessert, or chips.
And they’re “eating healthy” — but their blood sugar says otherwise.
👉 Over time, this pattern starts to show up as:
- Anxiety (especially afternoon or late at night)
- PMS, mood swings, and low progesterone
- Poor sleep, including waking up wired at 2AM
- Cravings for sugar or carbs
- Brain fog and afternoon fatigue
- Bloating, constipation, or gut symptoms
- Stubborn belly fat that won’t budge
- High cholesterol or triglycerides on labs (even with a “good diet”)

If you’re only looking at your weight or glucose labs, you might think everything’s fine.
But for so many women, early insulin resistance is already brewing behind the scenes.
WHAT IS INSULIN RESISTANCE (IN REAL PEOPLE LANGUAGE)
Insulin is your body’s “blood sugar gatekeeper.” Every time you eat carbs like bread, tortillas, crackers, or chips (or sugar, yes even fruit), your pancreas releases insulin to help move that glucose out of your bloodstream and into your cells for energy.
But when you’re constantly spiking your blood sugar (think: snacks, wine, stress, skipping meals, high-carb breakfasts, late-night eating), your cells slowly stop responding to insulin. Your body has to pump out more and more insulin to get the same job done.
That’s insulin resistance.
At first, your glucose may still look “normal.”
Your A1c may still be “fine.”
But insulin has been working overtime behind the scenes for years.
Left unchecked, this pattern can eventually lead to:
- Hormone dysfunction (PMS, low progesterone, PCOS, fertility struggles)
- Fatigue, brain fog, anxiety
- High cholesterol, triglycerides, inflammation
- Belly fat accumulation
- Poor sleep
And eventually… pre-diabetes or diabetes
EARLY WARNING SIGNS (BEFORE GLUCOSE IS HIGH)
Here’s where most people get misled — your blood sugar can still look completely fine while all of these show up:
- Afternoon energy crashes
- Feeling shaky, irritable, or “hangry” if you go too long without eating
- Intense carb or sugar cravings
- PMS, cycle irregularity, or estrogen dominance
- Anxiety, especially tied to meals or sleep
- Waking up between 1–3AM
- Brain fog, poor focus, or fatigue after meals
- Weight gain despite “eating healthy”
- Belly weight you can’t seem to lose
- Elevated cholesterol, triglycerides, or inflammation on labs

WHY THIS GETS MISSED:
Most doctors only check glucose and A1c — both of which are late-stage markers.
By the time they’re elevated, you’ve likely been insulin resistant for years.
👉 Insulin levels typically shift first — but it’s rarely tested in conventional care.
👉 In functional medicine, we look deeper into your full metabolic picture:
- Insulin (fasting and post-meal)
- Glucose (fasting and real-time)
- A1c (averages)
- Triglycerides & HDL
- Inflammatory markers (CRP-hs)
- Liver enzymes
- Nutrient status (magnesium, B12, folate, vitamin D, zinc, etc)
Cortisol rhythm (because blood sugar and stress are tightly linked)
WHY TESTING MATTERS:
- A CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) helps you catch glucose spikes and crashes in real time — before they ever show up on labs. This shows the daily patterns that bloodwork simply can’t capture.
- Comprehensive bloodwork gives us your insulin levels, nutrient depletions, liver stress, and inflammation — all the pieces that are usually overlooked.
👉 This is exactly what we go over in my Functional Medicine Consults — where I help you map out what labs are actually worth running, review your blood sugar and hormone data, and build a plan that works for your body.
HOW YOU CAN START ADDRESSING IT NOW:
- Eat a high-protein, savory breakfast (skip smoothies, fruit, and oatmeal).
- Prioritize 30–40g of protein per meal.
- If you’re not sure where you’re starting, download MyFitnessPal and track how much you’re getting right now — most people are way under-eating protein, which leaves blood sugar unstable and cravings higher.
- If you’re not sure where you’re starting, download MyFitnessPal and track how much you’re getting right now — most people are way under-eating protein, which leaves blood sugar unstable and cravings higher.
Once you know your baseline, increase your protein and healthy fats to hit your goal.
👉 The more protein and fat you eat, the less room you’ll have for carbs (which is key, because carbs and sugar spike glucose and insulin).
After a week or so, you’ll get a good sense of portions and can eyeball it from there.
Bonus tip: you can even ask ChatGPT:
“I’m a ___ year old, male/female, ___lbs, sedentary/moderately active/very active, and my goal is to _____ (lose/maintain/gain weight or muscle). What should my daily calories and macros be?”
- Balance carbs with protein and fat (no naked carbs).
Add guac to those chips, organic cheese to those crackers, chicken or ground beef to those tortillas. Snacking on carbs by themselves will spike your blood sugar like crazy — pairing them with protein and fat helps blunt that spike and keep things stable.
- Walk after meals to improve insulin sensitivity.
- Take a shot of apple cider vinegar before meals.
- Cut out processed carbs, added sugars, and snacking all day.
Eat 3 solid meals with enough protein, fat, and vegetables that you don’t need snacks between.
- Strength train 2–4x/week. (Muscle helps regulate blood sugar better than anything.)
- Support your liver with bitter foods + drainage support (ex: KL Support by Cellcore).
- Manage stress + regulate your nervous system daily.
- Use a CGM to track patterns (you can get Lingo for $49 for 2 weeks).
Run functional bloodwork to get ahead of the problem before it progresses — especially if you have a family history of diabetes, metabolic, or cardiovascular issues.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Insulin resistance doesn’t happen overnight.
And it doesn’t just show up as high blood sugar.
If you catch it early — and actually look in the right places — you can completely reverse the process before it spirals.
