Most people think “digestion” is just about drinking more water or adding fiber. But if you’re not pooping daily, that’s a red flag that something deeper is going on.

It’s not only about what you eat — it’s also about how you eat, how your body breaks food down, and what’s stressing your system.

Both functional medicine and Chinese medicine agree: daily elimination is a vital sign of health.

When your bowels are backed up, your body recycles old hormones and toxins instead of eliminating them. That’s why constipation can leave you moody, bloated, foggy, and breaking out.  On the flip side, diarrhea is often a sign of inflammation or gut dysbiosis (too many bad bugs, not enough good ones).

Before jumping into detoxes, cleanses, or quick fixes, you’ve got to make sure the foundations are solid. These simple but powerful habits train your digestion to run like clockwork.

REMOVE INFLAMMATORY FOODS

If you’re eating foods that constantly irritate your gut, it doesn’t matter how many probiotics or fiber powders you add — your digestion will stay inflamed.

Processed foods, seed oils, sugar, and alcohol are the obvious culprits, but even common foods like gluten, grains and dairy can be inflammatory triggers for many people (even if they’re marketed as “healthy” or “whole grains”).

Eating out frequently can also be an issue since restaurant food is loaded with hidden oils, additives, and salt that stress your gut lining.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • Bloating or gas after meals
  • Skin flares (acne, rashes) tied to food
  • Digestion swinging between constipation and diarrhea

PRO TIPS:

  • Try a simple elimination: pull out processed foods, sugar, seed oils, alcohol, gluten, and dairy for 3–4 weeks, then slowly reintroduce one-by-one.
    • Following Whole30 is a great way to keep it organized as they have a TON of resources (websites, shopping lists, pinterest posts, recipes, etc)
  • Clear out seed oils at home (canola, sunflower, safflower, vegetable oil) and replace with olive oil, ghee, grass-fed butter, tallow, or avocado oil.
  • Read ingredient labels — if you wouldn’t stock it in your own pantry (think: guar gum, canola oil, Red 40), skip it.
  • Cook more meals at home so you actually know what’s going into your food.
  • Avoid foods that come in bags and boxes. Stick with meat, veggies, and small portions of fruit.
  • Need inspiration? Google “Paleo ____” or “Whole30 recipes” to get started.

CHEW YOUR FOOD

Most people swallow food half-chewed and wonder why their digestion feels sluggish. Digestion starts in your mouth — enzymes in saliva break down carbs and signal your stomach to release acid. If you skip this step, food sits longer, ferments, and slows down motility → harder to poop daily.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • You feel bloated, heavy or backed up after meals
  • You don’t poop daily even with a “healthy” diet
  • Diarrhea hits when undigested food irritates your gut lining → body “aborts mission”
  • Extra signs: brain fog, fatigue, skin breakouts

PRO TIP:

  • Chewing thoroughly (30–50x per bite) naturally boosts stomach acid and helps your gut do its job without supplements.

WARM, SAVORY BREAKFASTS

Cold, sugary breakfasts (smoothies, cereal, fruit bowls) spike blood sugar, raise cortisol, and stall motility. In Chinese medicine, they’re “cold and damp,” which weakens digestive fire — leaving your gut too sluggish to clear out waste.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • You don’t poop in the morning, or only later in the day
  • Constipation some days, loose stools other days
  • Mid-morning crash, anxiety, or sugar cravings
  • You’re bloated, puffy, and moody

PRO TIP:

  • Drink a glass of warm lemon water or diluted glass of ACV to get your guts moving in the morning.
  • Eat a warm, protein-rich breakfast within 30–60 minutes of waking to “wake up” digestion and kickstart regular poops.

STOMACH ACID SUPPORT

Without enough stomach acid, proteins ferment in the gut → gas, constipation, and poor nutrient absorption (B12, zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium).

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • Acid reflux or stomach burning
  • Constipation, skinny “rabbit trail” poops, or going only every few days
  • Burping food hours after eating
  • Heavy or sluggish after protein-heavy meals
  • Extra signs: fatigue, anxiety, hair loss, or nutrient deficiencies (B12, zinc, iron)

 ✅ PRO TIP:

EAT ENOUGH HEALTHY FATS

Contrary to what the 90’s Food Pyramid and South Beach Diet told us, fats aren’t the enemy — they’re one of the keys to pooping daily (and making hormones!).

Dietary fat signals your digestive system to release bile, which lubricates stool and keeps motility moving. If you’re still living in “low fat” mode, your gut may literally be missing the trigger it needs to eliminate.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • Dry, hard, pellet-like poops
  • Constipation that doesn’t improve with fiber alone
  • Extra signs: PMS, irregular cycles, fatigue, dull/dry skin, brain fog, or mood swings

PRO TIPS:

  • Add healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, ghee, coconut oil, nuts/seeds, and fatty fish to every meal.
  • Rotate your fat sources for diversity.
  • Macro guide: Aim for about 30–40% of your daily calories from fat (for most women, that’s ~60–80g per day depending on body size/activity). That breaks down to about 1–2 thumb-sized servings per meal.

SUPPORT BILE FLOW

Even if you’re eating enough fat, your body needs bile to break it down and move things through.

Bile is made in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and released when you eat fat. If bile is sluggish, stools get sticky, float, or look pale. You also recycle toxins and old hormones instead of eliminating them.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • Constipation after fatty meals
  • Stools that float, look pale/clay-colored, or leave oily residue
  • Needing to wipe endlessly
  • Extra signs: nausea after fried food, fullness after small portions, right-sided rib tightness, acne, hormone imbalance, fatigue

PRO TIPS:

  • Bitter foods (arugula, dandelion greens, lemon) help stimulate bile naturally.
  • Wearing Castor oil packs over the liver/gallbladder area overnight can also improve flow and reduce sluggishness.
  • LV/GB by Designs for Health supports bile flow, liver detox, and fat digestion.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Daily, complete poops aren’t optional — they’re a sign your digestion, hormones, and detox pathways are actually working.

And while most people reach for fiber powders, probiotics, or “gut cleanses,” the truth is that the basics matter first.

Chewing your food, eating warm savory meals, getting enough healthy fats, and supporting bile flow are the foundations that set your gut up for success.

If you’re constipated, skipping days, or swinging between diarrhea and backup, start here. These simple shifts can completely change the way your digestion feels — and your energy, mood, skin, and hormones will thank you too.

👉 In the next blog, Why Fiber Won’t Fix Alone Won’t Fix Constipation, we’ll dig into fiber, food diversity, and your microbiome — because once the foundations are dialed in, the next step is making sure your gut bugs have what they need to thrive. Spoiler: it’s not about eating the same salad every day.
