If you’ve been told to “just eat more fiber” to fix constipation, you already know it doesn’t always work. In fact, sometimes it makes things worse — more bloating, more discomfort, and still no daily poop.

That’s because it’s not just about more fiber… it’s about the right kind of fiber, the diversity of foods you’re eating, and how well your microbiome (gut bugs) are doing their job.

👉 If you missed Blog 1: The Foundations of Healthy Poops, start there first.

We talk about how the seemingly boring basics of:

  • chewing your food
  • eating warm savory breakfasts
  • supporting stomach acid
  • balancing healthy fats + bile flow

are actually essential to having good digestion.

Once those basics are covered, the next step is building a thriving microbiome with the right fiber to feed it, and gut-friendly habits.

This is what helps you go daily, keeps your immune system sharp, balances mood, and clears up skin issues — all from your bathroom habits. 💩

BALANCE YOUR FIBER (SOLUBLE + INSOLUBLE)

Fiber isn’t just “roughage.” The two types do completely different jobs in your gut — and you need a balance of both (and a healthy gut microbiome) for smooth, daily poops.

  • SOLUBLE fiber:
    • Dissolves in water and turns into a gel-like texture.
    • Fermented by gut bugs into short-chain fatty acids (like butyrate) → fuel for colon cells, reduces inflammation, strengthens your gut lining
    • Translation: soluble fiber = food for your microbiome.

Examples:  chia, flax, beans, lentils, avocado, squash, pumpkin, apples, pears

  • INSOLUBLE fiber:
    • Adds bulk and sweep, helping stool form and move through so you’re not straining on the toilet.

Examples: leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, celery, cucumbers (skin on), carrots

You need both for smooth, daily poops. Too much of one without the other can leave you constipated, running to the bathroom, or stuck in that bloat → diarrhea cycle.

Too much insoluble fiber (without enough soluble):

  • Adds bulk but doesn’t soften → dry, hard stools → constipation
  • Can irritate sensitive guts → urgency or diarrhea (esp. IBS

Too much soluble fiber (without enough insoluble):

  • Holds onto water and slows motility → loose stools or diarrhea
  • Over-ferments → gas + bloating

👉 This is why you need a variety of veggies. That “eat the rainbow” thing? Not just a Skittles slogan.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • You’re constipated even when you’re “eating healthy”
  • Poops are inconsistent — hard one day, loose the next
  • Bloating, fatigue, anxiety, skin breakouts

PRO TIPS:

  • Add one soluble + one insoluble veggie → 2 veggies per meal minimum
  • Cook veggies (steam, roast, sauté) instead of eating raw salads or veg so it’s easier on digestion
  • If you know you’re not going to get enough veggies, try OptiFiber powder (glucomannan).
    • Start with ¼ to ½ a scoop and work your way up.
    • It’s much gentler on the gut compared to psyllium (which can make things worse for sensi guts) or the junk fillers that show up in commercial fiber products. Speaking of which…
  • 🚫 Skip Metamucil: most formulas are packed with artificial colors, sweeteners, and fillers that irritate the gut lining instead of healing it.

WHEN FIBER MAKES THINGS WORSE

Here’s the part nobody talks about: if your gut is out of balance (dysbiosis), adding a ton of fiber can actually make symptoms worse.

Fiber feeds bacteria — and if the “bad bugs” outnumber the good, you’re just giving fuel to the wrong team. Result = more gas, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea.

That’s why some people say, “fiber just makes me miserable” or “vegetables make me feel worse.”

👉 Example: I had a friend who lived on McDonald’s + fast food and swore veggies wrecked her digestion. Why? Because when your gut microbiome is weak or imbalanced, fiber from vegetables ferments into excess gas and toxins instead of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (like butyrate). Fast food feels “easier” in the short term because it’s low in fiber, so there’s nothing for the bacteria to ferment — but long-term, that just starves out the good bugs even more.

Bottom line: if veggies make you feel worse, it’s not that vegetables are the problem — it’s that your microbiome needs rebalancing first.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • You feel more bloated or gassy when you add fiber-rich foods or powders
  • Your constipation/diarrhea gets worse instead of better
  • You react to prebiotics or “gut health” supplements everyone else seems to rave about

PRO TIPS:

  • Start low + slow if you’re using a fiber supplement (Optifiber powder is my go to). Start with ½ the dose (or even ¼) and increase gradually each week.
  • Pair fiber with gut-healing foods (bone broth, cooked veggies, healthy fats) to reduce irritation.
  • If your gut is really reactive, stick with gentler fibers like glucomannan (OptiFiber) instead of psyllium or commercial blends with fillers.
  • Support your microbiome while you add fiber — a spore-based probiotic like MegaSporeBiotic helps crowd out bad bugs, balance dysbiosis, and make fiber work for you instead of against you.
  • And most importantly: TEST, don’t guess. Functional stool testing or a SIBO breath test will show you what’s actually happening in your microbiome so you know whether fiber is your friend right now — or if you need to rebalance and focus on the rest of the tips first.

EAT THE RAINBOW FOR DIVERSITY

Your gut bugs eat what you eat.  If you eat the same 5 foods on repeat (looking at you, Mr/Mrs broccoli + chicken + rice every day), your microbiome gets bored and weak.

A weak microbiome = weak digestion, low immunity, and more inflammation.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • Constipation, diarrhea, or bloating that never really improves
  • You get sick often or it takes forever to recover
  • You’ve got food sensitivities popping up (certain foods trigger reactions they never used to). PS this is a sign you probably have leaky gut.
  • Extra signs: skin issues (eczema, acne, rosacea), fatigue that doesn’t match your activity, anxiety or mood swings, stubborn weight that doesn’t shift even with diet changes

PRO TIPS:

  • Rotate your produce weekly — swap spinach for arugula, broccoli for bok choy, apples for berries
  • Aim for 2 different colors of veggies at each meal (example: greens + reds at lunch, orange + purple at dinner)

WHY COLORS MATTER FOR YOUR MICROBIOME

  • Green (spinach, kale, broccoli, herbs): Rich in chlorophyll + magnesium → feed gut bugs that help with motility, reduce constipation, and support detox.
  • Red (tomatoes, strawberries, beets): Lycopene + betalains → anti-inflammatory, support circulation, and feed bacteria linked to heart and immune health.
  • Orange/Yellow (carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, squash): Carotenoids (beta-carotene) → strengthen gut lining, feed bugs that boost immune resilience, and support skin health.
  • Purple/Blue (blueberries, eggplant, purple cabbage, blackberries): Anthocyanins → powerful antioxidants that reduce gut inflammation and feed bacteria linked to better blood sugar balance.
  • White (onions, garlic, leeks, mushrooms, cauliflower): Prebiotic compounds (like inulin + allicin) → directly fuel beneficial bacteria (esp. Bifidobacteria) and support antimicrobial balance against “bad bugs.”

RESTORE THE MICROBIOME

Your microbiome = trillions of bacteria in your gut.

  • The good guys make short-chain fatty acids that literally fuel your colon and help you poop.
  • The bad guys create toxins, gas, and inflammation that stall digestion.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • History of antibiotics, food poisoning, or gut infections
  • Constipation/diarrhea cycles, no matter how “clean” you eat
  • Extra signs: anxiety, fatigue, eczema, acne, rosacea, brain fog

PRO TIPS:

  • Try my fave probiotic of all time MegaSporeBiotic — they survive stomach acid and actually re-colonize your gut. Follow directions and start slow with one every other day because it’s powerful AF!
  • Book a functional medicine session with me so we can actually test (stool, SIBO, leaky gut) to see what bugs are overgrown or missing
  • Keep feeding your good bugs with a diverse variety of cooked veggies and meats.
  • Minimized processed foods (that come in a bag, box or can) and seed oils (canola, vegetable, safflower, sunflower, corn)

AVOID COLD FOODS + DRINKS

In Chinese medicine, digestion is like a fire — and you don’t throw ice on a fire if you want it to burn. Cold foods and drinks slow enzyme activity, stall motility, and leave food sitting in your gut instead of moving through smoothly.

🔥 HOW YOU KNOW:

  • Bloating, brain fog, or sluggish poops after smoothies or iced coffee
  • Energy tanks after cold meals
  • Extra signs: cold hands/feet, anxiety, period cramps

PRO TIPS:

  • Swap iced drinks for room temp or hot
  • Cook veggies instead of eating raw salads every day
  • Use warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, black pepper

FINAL THOUGHTS

Fiber matters — but it’s not just about dumping more chia seeds on your yogurt. It’s about the right balance of fiber, the variety of foods you feed your gut bugs, and supporting a diverse microbiome.

That’s the key to pooping daily, strengthening your immune system, balancing mood, and keeping inflammation low.

👉 If you’ve nailed the basics from Blog 1 and start layering in these steps, you’ll feel the difference in your digestion, your energy, your skin, and yes — your poops.
