“I want to test for parasites first.”

Or my favorite…

“My doctor already tested me and I’m clear.”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard that, I could retire on a beach somewhere (ideally Santa Teresa, Costa Rica 🌴).

HERE’S THE PROBLEM…

Parasite testing is far from perfect, even with advanced functional labs and stool tests that I use.  I’ve had plenty of patients have “negative” test results and still pass visible parasites during a cleanse.

HERE’S WHY THE REASON TESTING FOR PARASITES FALLS SHORT…

1. LOCATION MATTERS

Parasites don’t just hang out in your intestines.

Parasites don’t just live in your intestines. They can set up camp in your liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, lymphatic system, sinuses, lungs, or even muscle tissue.

Most doctors (and even many functional labs) only test stool samples, so they’re only looking at what’s being shed in the gut that day.

Most doctors (and even many functional labs) only test stool samples, so they’re only looking at what’s being shed in the gut that day.

2. YOU ONLY FIND WHAT YOU’RE TESTING FOR

Most stool panels only screen for a handful of common parasites (like Giardia or pinworms). Even my specialized panel GI Effects tests for 20-25 BUT there are hundreds (if not thousands) of species that infect humans that we know of — and unless the lab is specifically looking for it, it won’t show up.

That means you could still have a parasite burden, but because the test wasn’t designed to catch that species, your results come back “negative.”

3. THE LIFE CYCLE TRAP

Parasites have multiple life stages: egg, larva, and adult

Some species shed eggs only once every few weeks or months.

That means if you test on a day when they’re not shedding, the lab result can look squeaky clean — even if they’re very much in your system.

This also explains why symptoms flare around the full moon. Parasites are more active then — feeding and reproducing — which makes them easier to flush out during a cleanse.

4. BIOFILM CAMOUFLAGE

Parasites are pros at hiding. They create biofilm — a sticky, glue-like shield — that makes them harder for your immune system and stool testing to detect.

Here’s where it gets sneakier: many parasites also carry “hitchhikers” — bacteria, viruses, and fungi they protect inside their bodies.

This doesn’t make those pathogens invisible to labs, but it DOES mean your immune system often can’t fully get rid of them until the parasite load is lowered.

I’ve seen this firsthand:

  • One woman battled H. pylori for years. It showed up on tests, she treated it, and it always came back. After a parasite cleanse, her H. pylori test has stayed negative for over 2 years.
  • Another patient had constant yeast overgrowth and vaginal infections that never stayed gone. Once she did a few rounds of the cleanse, her Candida symptoms cleared without another round of antifungals.
  • I’ve also seen viral symptoms (like EBV flares) calm down after cleansing. Not because the virus was invisible before — but because the immune system finally had enough bandwidth to fight once parasites weren’t suppressing it.

5. SAMPLE SIZE LIMITATIONS

Most conventional stool tests use a very small sample, sometimes just one or two tiny swabs.

It’s like taking a bucket of water from a lake and expecting to catch a fish.

Possible? Sure.

Likely? Not really.

Even 3-day collections can miss them. If shedding is inconsistent, you can still test “negative” just because the timing didn’t match up — especially if parasites are living outside the intestines altogether.

SO HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU GOT PARASITES?

In functional medicine, your symptoms + health history often speak louder than a single lab test.

  • Do your symptoms flare with the full moon?
  • Did they start after travel or food poisoning?
  • Do you have multiple “mystery” issues like fatigue, bloating, cravings, or skin problems that haven’t resolved with diet changes or supplements?

👉 If yes, your body might already be telling you what a test can’t.

WHY A CLEANSE STILL HELPS (EVEN IF YOUR TEST IS NEGATIVE)

Even if your lab test comes back negative, it doesn’t mean you’re truly “parasite-free.”

Your symptoms, history, and response to a cleanse often tell the real story.

Personally, I do a parasite cleanse seasonally — because let’s be real, I know I’ve picked up critters along the way from sushi, traveling, gardening, and even just everyday food exposures.

The point isn’t to wait around for “proof” on a lab slip — because most of the time, parasites don’t show up there anyway. It’s about recognizing the reality that a cleanse won’t hurt you, it can only help by creating an internal environment where parasites (and the bacteria/viruses they shelter) can’t thrive in the first place.
