If you’re feeling anxious, moody, tired, wired, craving sugar, struggling with PMS, or waking up at 2AM — you might automatically assume it’s “hormones.”

And you’re not totally wrong — but for a lot of people, the real root cause is actually blood sugar instability.

Most people don’t realize that hormones and blood sugar are tightly connected.

When blood sugar is swinging up and down all day, it puts stress on your adrenals, ovaries, thyroid, gut, and nervous system — leading to the symptoms you’re feeling.

The good news? This means we have a VERY fixable entry point.

HOW BLOOD SUGAR IMPACTS YOUR HORMONES:

Low progesterone → Blood sugar crashes can increase cortisol, which steals from your progesterone production (hello PMS, anxiety, mood swings).

Estrogen dominance → Insulin resistance can slow down how your body clears estrogen, leading to heavy periods, breast tenderness, and bloating.

Adrenal burnout → Constant blood sugar highs and lows stress your adrenals, leaving you wired but exhausted, especially in the afternoons.

Sleep issues → Blood sugar crashes overnight can trigger that 2–3AM wakeup (the “I feel wide awake but don’t know why” problem).

Thyroid function → Chronic blood sugar issues can suppress thyroid conversion, slowing your metabolism, hair growth, and energy.

WHY THIS GETS MISSED:

Most people (and doctors) go straight to testing hormones when symptoms like those listed above show up — but blood sugar regulation actually sits higher up the chain of command.

Your body can’t properly make, balance, or clear hormones if your blood sugar is dysregulated. So even when hormone labs get checked, we’re often looking at the downstream effect instead of the upstream driver.

Hormones often get tested at the wrong time too — you need to test them on days 19–21 of your cycle to actually assess them properly for ovulation. And for blood sugar? You need to be fasting and testing first thing in the morning to get an accurate baseline — not at 3 PM after lunch just because that’s when you happened to be at the doctor’s office.

Even when blood sugar does get tested, most doctors are only checking glucose and maybe A1c — but those don’t tell the full story. Glucose fluctuates minute-to-minute depending on when you last ate, how you slept, or even how stressed you were walking into your appointment. A1c, often referred to as a ‘ 3 month summary of your blood sugar levels’, can also be misleading if you have anemia or anything affecting red blood cell turnover — which most people don’t realize directly impacts their score.

And most importantly? Almost nobody is testing insulin.

Insulin is often the first thing to shift when blood sugar regulation starts breaking down — long before glucose or A1c ever flag high. If you’re not testing insulin, you’re missing the earliest red flags that you’re becoming insulin resistant.

Even with labs, we’re still only seeing one single moment in time — not the full picture of what your blood sugar is doing throughout the day. The real problem is often hiding in the spikes and crashes happening after meals, during sleep, and under stress — and those patterns can never be captured on routine labs.

👉 That’s where a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) becomes a total game changer. You can get one from Lingo for just $49 for 2 weeks!

You wear it on your arm for 2–4 weeks, and it shows you exactly how your blood sugar responds to meals, stress, sleep, workouts, and alcohol — in real time. You see the full pattern, not just one lab number.

HOW YOU CAN START FIXING IT TODAY:

  • Start your day with a high-protein, fiber-rich, savory breakfast to stabilize your glucose in the morning. You’re most sensitive to glucose first thing, so it’s better to avoid the sweet stuff until later in the day. That means no smoothies, no fruit. Think eggs, veggies (zucchini, spinach, broccoli, avocado), plus protein like chicken sausage or organic sugar-free bacon.
  • Avoid fasting if you’re already dysregulated. Fasting isn’t for everyone — especially women. Most intermittent fasting studies were done on men. There’s a way to do it strategically for women, but it’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all approach and I don’t recommend it for most of my female patients.
  • Walk after meals to flatten spikes. This helps regulate your blood sugar, gets you outside, recalibrates your nervous system, and supports vitamin D levels.
  • Balance carbs with protein and fat at every meal. No naked carbs — meaning no chips, crackers, or bread on their own without fat, protein, or fiber to slow absorption.
  • Get your functional bloodwork done. I read labs a little differently than most providers (and actually explain them to you).
  • Use a CGM for 14–30 days to collect data and make targeted, personalized changes.
